The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable handset, made an unexpected public appearance on the Emmys red carpet at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Apple CEO John Ternus arrived with the device tucked into his tuxedo jacket, offering an early glimpse of a product that has generated considerable anticipation.
During the event, Ternus asked a reporter from Deadline, Antonia Blyth, whether she wanted to see the first foldable iPhone. He then retrieved the iPhone Duo from his pocket, opened it, closed it again, and returned it to his jacket. Blyth reacted with a small squeal of delight, a moment captured on video that quickly circulated online.
Apple CEOs and unreleased iPhones
This was not the first occasion on which an Apple chief executive was seen carrying an unreleased iPhone. On 9 January 2007, after unveiling the original iPhone at Macworld, Steve Jobs told a reporter he would begin carrying the device now that it had been introduced to the public.
Former CEO Tim Cook was photographed on two known occasions with an unreleased model. In August 2017, the outline of what appeared to be an iPhone 8 was visible in his trouser pocket, the bulge too tall to be an iPhone 7 and too narrow to be an iPhone 8 Plus. During a Q&A session at Oxford, an iPhone X gradually slipped from Cook’s pocket, identifiable by its vertically mounted dual-camera arrangement.
Reaction to the foldable display
Some online observers commented that the foldable handset’s internal display appeared dark and difficult to see in the video. Several explanations have been suggested. Red carpet areas are brightly lit to ensure celebrities are captured on camera with sufficient light, which can make screens harder to view. It is also possible that Ternus had the display brightness set to a low level.
The appearance was not a promotional event arranged in advance by Apple, so the display settings were not adjusted for filming. As a result, the device’s internal screen and its crease were not showcased in the manner a staged demonstration might have allowed.
