The Galaxy S27 Ultra is poised to break with years of Samsung tradition by adopting a larger battery, according to a Chinese regulatory listing. The 2027 flagship is expected to arrive with a 5700mAh battery, marking the first time Samsung has moved beyond the 5000mAh capacity that has defined its Ultra line for several generations.
The information appears in a filing tied to the 3C (China Compulsory Certification) scheme, the safety mark required for electronic products, toys, electrical appliances and automotive parts sold in the country. It serves a comparable purpose to the UL mark used in the United States, though participation in the American scheme is voluntary.
A first for the Ultra series
Samsung has never previously raised the battery capacity on its Galaxy S Ultra handsets. Even so, battery life has improved over the years through other means. Processor optimisation, along with process shrink that reduced transistor size and increased density, delivered chipsets that were both more powerful and more energy efficient.
A move to 5700mAh would represent a 14% increase over the cell used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, a substantial jump for a single generation. Samsung has long been cautious about raising battery capacities on its flagship phones following the recall of the Galaxy Note 7, which was pulled from sale twice and eventually cancelled after batteries in several units caught fire, causing property damage and, in some cases, injury.
The incidents prompted the FAA to ban the Note 7 from being carried on aircraft by passengers or packed in checked luggage. Investigators later concluded that design errors and manufacturing faults from the two contracted cell suppliers were responsible. The 3500mAh capacity itself was not to blame; a key design flaw failed to leave room for the battery to expand during normal use.
Samsung and silicon-carbon technology
Across the wider industry, Samsung has trailed Chinese rivals that have adopted silicon-carbon batteries, which pack higher capacities into less space. Samsung used a small amount of silicon-carbon technology in the cells powering the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8. The proportion was so minimal that these batteries are still classified as lithium-ion.
The same 3C listing also points to a 5200mAh battery for the Galaxy S27 Pro, expected to be a more compact counterpart to the Ultra. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is tipped to feature a 6.9-inch M16 display, while the Galaxy S27 Pro is listed with a 6.5-inch M16 display.
