ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude are back online after all three major AI chatbots began experiencing problems at roughly the same time on Thursday. The overlapping disruption left users across multiple platforms unable to access services they rely on for a wide range of tasks.
The issues surfaced at about 11AM ET, when ChatGPT started returning error messages for people attempting to use the chatbot. OpenAI’s status page reported “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex” as engineers worked to restore normal operation.
What the ChatGPT outage affected
The ChatGPT outage extended well beyond ordinary conversations. Users found themselves unable to complete logins, upload files, or use voice mode. Search, deep research, image generation and other features were also affected during the incident, disrupting both casual and professional workflows.
The timing was notable for OpenAI, as the disruption occurred while the company was teasing the launch of Astra, its new AI model. The status update indicated that the problems spanned both the consumer-facing chatbot and the Codex coding tool.
Grok and Claude affected at the same time
The disruption was not limited to OpenAI. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, along with Claude Code and other Claude services, encountered issues during the same window. Grok, developed by xAI, was likewise caught up in the wave of problems that struck the three services in close succession.
All three platforms have since returned to service following the simultaneous disruption on Thursday.
