Apple TV has released the trailer for The Last First: Winter K2, a documentary set to premiere on 2 October. The film promises an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing and its shifting culture, and currently holds a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What the documentary covers
Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, The Last First: Winter K2 tells what is described as a complex, harrowing and moving story. It focuses on a 2021 expedition and follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson alongside the Pakistani father-and-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara. Together, this party of mountaineers set out to become the first to summit K2 in winter, when the mountain’s conditions are at their most brutal.
During the ascent, the climbers find themselves sharing the treacherous route with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients, and a Nepalese team no longer content simply to help Westerners achieve mountaineering glory. The documentary takes viewers to the icy heights and unpredictable weather of K2, revealing a layered account of strategy and determination, class and caste, money and power, all under life-and-death circumstances.
How to watch on Apple TV
The documentary was first announced earlier this year, when Apple acquired the global rights to the Sundance Film Festival selection. The platform later confirmed the 2 October release date before publishing the trailer.
Apple TV is available for around £12 per month, or as part of the Apple One bundle. The service features titles including Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Silo. The Last First: Winter K2 joins the catalogue from 2 October.
