T-Mobile iPhone Handoff is now available, making the operator the only US carrier to support the new iOS 27 feature. The capability lets subscribers use the same phone number across two devices, with calls, messages and Find My location automatically following whichever iPhone is actively in use.
The carrier was spotted testing the feature in early September, ahead of the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and Duo. It has since been officially announced.
How iPhone Handoff Works
With iPhone Handoff, there is no need to open a second line. Users can switch between two iPhones and have their activity move seamlessly with them. The appeal is clearest for those who prefer to keep two handsets, such as professionals who want a second device free of work apps, alongside developers and reviewers who regularly swap test units.
In a reader poll gathering 536 responses, 303 participants (57%) felt the feature would be useful. Around 60 respondents (11%) said they might switch to T-Mobile specifically to access it, while 173 (32%) noted that affording two devices was a barrier.
Pricing and Comparison With DIGITS
T-Mobile has confirmed a monthly fee of around £4 for the service. Although Apple built the framework into iOS 27, carriers still bear the operational costs of running it. For those who already own two handsets, the charge remains lower than paying for an entirely new line.
The fee has prompted questions given that T-Mobile has long offered its DIGITS app, which allows the same number to be used across multiple devices at no cost. The difference likely comes down to integration: Handoff is an implementation of Apple’s framework, while DIGITS is an in-house feature developed by the carrier.
For anyone wanting to be reachable across two iPhones without additional lines, T-Mobile is currently the sole option among US operators. Verizon is expected to add support for iPhone Handoff later this year.
