A Steam leak of roughly 12 terabytes of gaming data has reportedly been extracted from the platform owned by developer Valve. The exposed material appears to cover everything published on the service between about 2003 and 2013, offering an unusual glimpse into a decade of the storefront’s history.
The trove does not include a complete build of the long-rumoured Half-Life 3. It does, however, reportedly contain data relating to the cancelled Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Alongside this are prototypes of several titles, among them an early version of Left 4 Dead that features a different heads-up display and map locations absent from the retail release.
What the Leaked Data Contains
The material is not limited to Valve’s own catalogue. Users have reportedly identified data for other titles within the collection, including Grand Theft Auto 5. Content creators who follow Valve, including Scolcer and Gabe Follower, have posted about the leak online.
According to Scolcer, the data spanning 2003 to 2013 had been hidden in a public repository, with no hacking involved. Gabe Follower echoed this on X, attributing the exposure to Valve rather than any external intrusion.
Why the Data Stops at 2013
The information reportedly originates from Steam2, the system Valve launched in 2003 to deliver game updates through its digital storefront. Valve replaced Steam2 with SteamPipe in 2013, which explains why no material dated after that year appears within the leak.
The leak reportedly consists solely of game data and does not include any player data. Valve did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
