Android 17 is now reaching five Sony Xperia handsets, covering the current flagship, the two preceding flagship models, and a pair of mid-range devices. The rollout brings a range of interface refinements and new productivity features across the affected phones.
The Xperia models receiving Android 17
Five Sony Xperia models are currently being updated to Android 17. These are the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, the Sony Xperia 1 VII, the Sony Xperia 1 VI, the Sony Xperia 10 VIII, and the Sony Xperia 10 VII. The line-up comprises Sony’s present flagship, its two previous flagship handsets, and two mid-range models.
It is not yet clear whether other Xperia devices will also receive Android 17, and there is no confirmation on whether the update is presently limited to the UK. Owners can check availability by opening the Settings menu to download and install the software.
What the update adds
The Android 17 release introduces an expanded Quick Settings panel and additional lock-screen customisation, alongside improved screen recording. It also includes an external-display Desktop mode. On the Xperia 1 VIII, users can save, name and quickly switch between three personalised profiles covering colour tones, contrast and processing preferences.
On the Xperia 1 VIII, Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VI, Desktop mode allows a supported external display to be connected so that multiple apps can be used in a manner similar to a computer. A mouse and keyboard can be added, making it straightforward to check emails and view documents.
Further personalisation options
Android 17 also brings new and refreshed wallpapers, and users can customise the shape and style of their app icons. These changes extend the personalisation available across the compatible Xperia range.
Sony’s approach to smartphones has remained distinctive. The company has opted not to partner with a major US wireless carrier, preferring to sell its handsets unlocked, and it uses its Xperia phones as a showcase for its image sensors. Sony’s smartphone history stretches back to the 2008 Xperia X1, which ran Windows Mobile and featured a panels-based interface, followed by devices such as the Xperia Play with its slide-out gamepad and the 2015 Xperia Z5 Premium, which offered a 4K display.
The five phones confirmed for the current rollout are the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, Xperia 1 VII, Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 10 VIII and Xperia 10 VII.
