Slovenia's .si Domain Booms After Trump AI Rebrand

The .si domain extension has become a sought-after commodity worldwide after US President Donald Trump declared that the country would officially rename “artificial intelligence” to “super intelligence.” Less than a fortnight after the announcement, demand for the Slovenian suffix has surged.

Elon Musk, who has regained his trillionaire status, said he was renaming his AI company SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, marking its second name change in under three months. The shift reflects a wider rush among businesses and individuals to secure .si addresses for branding and resale.

Slovenia, the central European country whose official domain extension is .si, has registered more than 10,000 .si domain names every day since Wednesday. The country allows anyone to obtain a .si domain regardless of where they live. First Lady Melania Trump is a native of Slovenia.

How the .si surge began

Trump announced in his speech to the UN on 22 September that the US would begin using “super intelligence” to refer to AI in all official documents, stating that the word “artificial” makes intelligence sound fake. In a subsequent executive order titled Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence, he wrote that the new term “more appropriately captures the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies.”

He later announced a Super Intelligence Force, led by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton. The small task force will focus on engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations, critical infrastructure providers and AI companies.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined in 1955 by computer scientist John McCarthy, who defined it as “the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by humans.”

Domain values and registrations climb

A domain extension, or top-level domain, is the set of letters after the final dot in a web address. The most common extension is .com, followed by China’s .cn and Germany’s .de. Web hosting provider Hostinger reported that .si is now its second-most-popular domain extension after .com, with more than half of buyers based in the US and India.

Companies around the world have reacted by scooping up .si domain names for future branding, while others are acquiring them to resell to firms that want them. The domain name AI.si is now up for sale at nearly £520,000.

Register.si, Slovenia’s national registry and management platform, recorded more than 46,000 domain registrations in September, a more than 15-fold increase from the 3,515 logged in August. The .si domain launched in September 2025. Run by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, Register.si charges registrars such as Hostinger about £8 per domain, adding up to more than £225,000 in September.
