Samsung phone users can now sync photos and videos from the Gallery app directly to Google, as native Microsoft OneDrive integration comes to an end on 30 September. The update is rolling out over the coming days, though availability may vary depending on account type, device model or region.
The change means a new Sync photos and videos option appears within Gallery Settings. Once enabled, users can view and share multimedia from their Samsung devices through the Google Photos app and at photos.google.com.
What you need to use the feature
To use the feature, you must have a compatible Samsung device running Android 13 or newer, along with a personal Google account. To check which Android version you are running, go to Settings, then About phone, then Software information, and look for the Android version.
There are several limitations. Google Workspace accounts cannot use it, and synced items will not appear in Google features such as memories and highlights, live albums or search unless the photos and videos are backed up via Google Photos. Google Accounts supervised by parents are also ineligible.
Google states that you can back up photos, videos, albums, device folders such as downloads or screenshots, and metadata including timestamps, location and favourites status.
How to sync your Gallery
Syncing Samsung Gallery to Google Photos is optional, but storing photos and videos only within the Gallery can quickly consume phone storage. Open the Samsung Gallery app, then tap the three-line hamburger menu at the bottom right. Select Settings, followed by Sync Photos and videos. Choose a Google account and grant permission to sync media.
Deleting items from either Samsung Gallery or Google Photos will remove them from both apps and from cloud storage. Editing photos in either app will also apply the changes everywhere. Users can turn off syncing at any time, and any previously backed up items remain stored in their Google Account.
