The NYT Connections puzzle for Wednesday, 2 September 2026, has divided players thanks to an unusually tricky arrangement built around the word “dog”. In the daily game, participants must sort 16 words into four related categories, and on this occasion fully half of the words could precede “dog”.

Why the Puzzle Proved So Divisive
Eight of the 16 words paired naturally with “dog”: corn dog, hunting dog, sheep dog, rescue dog, salty dog, prairie dog, top dog and sausage dog. The unsorted grid also opened with the words BOW and WOW, which belonged to different categories, adding to the confusion.
The puzzle editors split the “dog” words into two distinct groups. The first category related to real, four-legged canines, comprising hunting, rescue, sheep and sausage, the latter referring to a dachshund. The remaining four words fell into the purple category alongside terms that are not actual canines, including one food (corn dog), one animal (prairie dog) and two slang expressions (salty dog and top dog).
Players React to the Sausage Dog Twist
Complaints appeared on Reddit, with several players highlighting the difficulty of separating the eight “dog” words. “I was like, ‘there’s 7 answers???'” one player wrote. Another admitted that after losing, their next search was to find out what a sausage dog actually was.
The term “sausage dog” is commonly used in Australia and the UK, and appears in the Australian animated series Bluey. Elsewhere the breed is more often called a “wiener dog” or simply a dachshund, which may explain why some players placed “sausage” into a group out of desperation.
Other commenters noted that the puzzle encouraged players to “presolve”, meaning that rather than selecting a group of four similar words and hoping for the best, solvers needed to sort all 16 words out before committing to an answer. The Connections puzzle previously overtook Wordle in popularity among daily online word games, and this particular grid is likely to have ended a number of player streaks.
