The Roomba Duo is among the more unusual designs to emerge from the robot vacuum sector, pairing a powerful floor-washing mothership with a compact Roomba that it lowers onto the floor using a mechanical arm. Shown as a working demonstration at IFA Berlin, the device drew attention for its industrial-looking deployment system and its dual-unit approach to household cleaning.
According to Adam Pope, iRobot’s chief engineer, the Roomba Duo is currently a concept rather than a product confirmed for sale. It represents the type of solution the company is exploring to address common consumer frustrations. The main egg-shaped module houses a floor washer and steamer said to be more capable than the hardware typically fitted to a standard robot vacuum, with power described as equivalent to a traditional wet-and-dry vacuum. That capability comes at the expense of autonomy, which the second unit is designed to provide.
How the Two Units Work Together
During the demonstration, the main unit cleaned up spilled spaghetti from carpet and sanitised the affected area. It then used a top-mounted mechanical arm and a landing-craft-style mechanism to lower a slim Roomba onto the floor, which began cleaning in the narrower sections of the obstacle course. iRobot said the sturdy arm is necessary to maintain stability under the additional weight. While the smaller robot navigated corners and barriers, the larger module returned towards its docking area after completing the heavier cleaning tasks.
Both units operate autonomously but share a single home map and an autonomous mobile dock, preventing them from duplicating work. They communicate in real time and connect through the Roomba Home app, which uses AI to coordinate tasks. The main unit vacuums and mops large, open areas, while the smaller Roomba handles spaces beneath furniture and other tight spots the bulkier module cannot reach.
The Specifications Behind the Concept
Although the Roomba Duo remains a concept with no confirmed route to market, iRobot shared several details. The mothership features a wet-and-dry floor-washing module, a high-performance motor and a high-capacity battery. It uses the company’s PowerSpin Max Roller, applying 46 newtons of downward pressure, a substantial increase over the 12 to 14 newtons typical of a robot vacuum. iRobot said this allows the floor to be scrubbed as thoroughly as cleaning by hand.
An internal heater generates steam to loosen tougher, dried-on grime and stains, and the company said the system can handle dirt, pasta sauce and cooking grease. The roller is self-cleaning, and a hot-air dryer positioned behind it dries the floor after mopping to protect wood flooring from moisture damage. The companion robot used in the demonstration was the Roomba Plus 575 Combo.
