The iPhone Duo may take the place of an iPad mini for certain users, according to comments from Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi.
Apple generally maintains clear boundaries between its products, ensuring each has a distinct purpose. However, the arrival of the iPhone Duo, and particularly its price point, prompted questions about whether it overlaps with the smaller tablet in Apple’s line-up.
Overlap With The iPad mini
When the iPhone Duo was introduced, some observers noted that buyers could achieve similar benefits by pairing a standard iPhone with an iPad mini. Federighi has now addressed that comparison directly, acknowledging the two devices serve overlapping needs.
“I agree for someone who maybe had an iPad mini… this device can often fill that space for them,” Federighi said during a short video interview with Marques Brownlee.
A Shift In Apple’s Product Strategy
Apple has traditionally worked to keep its devices separated by use case, so the acknowledgement that the iPhone Duo can substitute for an iPad mini marks a notable admission from within the company. The remark suggests that, for a subset of users, a single device may now cover tasks previously split across a phone and a compact tablet.
Federighi’s comments confirm that Apple recognises the overlap between the two products, particularly for those who previously relied on an iPad mini for everyday use.
