The iPhone Air 2 is reportedly due early next year, with a possible launch in March 2026. It is expected to be announced alongside the base iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e, positioning it within an increasingly crowded Apple range.
The iPhone Air line replaced the iPhone Plus models, which themselves succeeded the iPhone mini. Apple has been working to establish an iPhone that sits outside the base and Pro tiers while still appealing to buyers. So far, that goal has proven difficult to reach, and the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo raises fresh questions about where the Air fits.
Hardware concerns at the asking price
One of the main factors behind the modest sales of the original iPhone Air was that it offered comparatively limited hardware for its price of around £790. Buyers received a single camera, a small battery, reduced performance and an audio experience regarded as below par.
For many, spending roughly £80 more to secure an iPhone 17 Pro made greater sense. Based on the details circulating about the iPhone Air 2, a similar situation may apply. The new model is expected to gain at least one additional camera, though a telephoto lens would typically be anticipated at this price point.
The iPhone Air 2 is also likely to be priced higher than its predecessor, mirroring the increases applied to the new iPhone 18 Pro models. That shift could make it appear a weaker choice relative to what buyers receive for their money.
Battery and positioning questions
Although the battery capacity is said to be larger, it is expected to remain well behind rival handsets in the same price bracket. Without new battery technology, the iPhone Air 2 is likely to deliver unremarkable battery life.
Meanwhile, Apple’s base iPhone models continue to improve. The iPhone 17 sold exceptionally well worldwide, which further narrows the appeal of the Air series. The suggestion has long been that Apple intends the iPhone Air to become the default choice for the average customer, yet the reported specifications make that outcome harder to achieve.
As things stand, the iPhone Air 2 is set to arrive as part of a wider 2026 launch that also includes the base iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e.
