iOS 27 Apple Wallet: Split Bills and Create Custom Cards

iOS 27 Apple Wallet: Split Bills and Create Custom Cards
iOS 27 brings bill splitting from receipt photos and custom card creation to Apple Wallet, powered by Apple Intelligence. Here is how the new tools work.

Apple Wallet in iOS 27 introduces a bill-splitting tool that works directly from a photo of a receipt, aimed at anyone who regularly ends up covering the full cost of a meal out. The feature relies on Apple Intelligence to make individual items on a receipt selectable, so diners can quickly work out what they ordered and how much they owe.

It is one of several new Wallet capabilities that Apple previewed at its annual developer event, WWDC, in June, and which are now rolling out. Alongside receipt splitting, users can create custom Wallet items from scanned physical cards or build them from scratch, and view recurring payments if they hold an Apple Card.

For developers, iOS 27 adds the ability to produce posters for multi-ticket events and to include order tracking in retail apps using Apple Intelligence.

How to split a bill in Apple Wallet

Before using the new features, devices need to be running iOS 27. Receipt splitting begins in the new Siri mode within the Camera app. When the lens is pointed at a receipt, a prompt for Split Bill With Apple Cash appears. Users can search through their contacts to select who to divide the bill with, though each person must be able to pay using Apple Cash.

Apple Wallet then displays a list of the items ordered. From there, users can pick items, decide how the bill should be split and set how much to tip. The tool does not chase payment; it simply organises the split and requests amounts from contacts.

Creating custom Wallet cards

To add a Wallet item from a business card, or to build a digital card without one, tap the plus icon at the top to add something new. There is an option to scan a debit, credit, transit or other type of ID card, or to choose Create a Pass to work from a business card.

Editing a custom Wallet card lets users either import the contents of a scanned card and amend them, or enter their own details manually. Apple Wallet offers several templates, with adjustable colour and background. Card details can be edited later if information changes or a mistake is made. Newer Apple Watch models can pin these custom digital passes using the Smart Stack feature.

The custom card feature has performed well in early use. A digitised gym membership card was reported to scan reliably, with the scanner picking up the iPhone screen effectively and reducing clutter on a physical keyring.

To view recurring payments on an Apple Card, tap the card within Wallet and use the three dots at the top right to select the option from the menu. Further Apple Wallet features are expected to arrive as Apple continues to release updates to iOS 27.
