Instagram is taking steps to address the rise of fake AI-influencer accounts that have become harder to spot. The platform is renaming the existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile“, aiming to make it clearer when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a real human being.
Accounts such as the well-known AI persona Aitana Lopez will now carry the new “AI-generated profile” designation, signalling to users that the person shown does not exist in reality.
Why Instagram Is Changing the Label
According to a blog post from the company, the move responds directly to user frustration. “We’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated,” Instagram said. “They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person.”
The updated wording is intended to remove ambiguity. Where the previous “AI creator” phrasing left room for interpretation, the new AI-generated profile label states plainly that the individual depicted has been produced by artificial intelligence.
Enforcement Against Unlabelled Accounts
Beyond the naming change, Instagram plans to actively identify accounts that fail to self-label their AI-generated profiles. Accounts that do not disclose their artificial nature will face penalties, including reduced visibility across the platform. The measure targets operators who present synthetic personas as genuine people without transparency.
The initiative reflects a broader challenge for social platforms as generative tools make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and AI-created figures. By combining clearer labelling with enforcement, Instagram is seeking to give users a reliable way to recognise when the person in a profile is AI-generated.
Instagram will penalise accounts that do not self-label their AI-generated profiles by limiting their reach.
