Google Adds Live Voice Modes to Gmail, Docs and Keep

Google Adds Live Voice Modes to Gmail, Docs and Keep - Google Live voice modes
Google is rolling out Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live voice modes, letting you manage the apps by talking, powered by Gemini AI.

Google is rolling out AI-powered voice assistant modes for Gmail, Docs and Keep, allowing users to manage the apps simply by talking to them. The real-time conversational features, called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live, work in a similar way to the Gemini Live experience for Google’s chatbot. They aim to make it easier to note down or locate specific information when you are on the move or unable to do so manually.

Gmail Live is designed primarily to surface details from your inbox without the need to sift through lengthy email threads using keywords or subject lines. Google says you can ask questions such as “when is my kid’s next school event?”, and the voice assistant will pull that information from wherever it arrived in your Gmail inbox, feeding a summarised version back to you verbally while linking the email sources in the on-screen transcript. Users can ask follow-up questions without starting a new conversation, and interrupt the assistant mid-sentence to pivot to something else.

What Docs Live and Keep Live offer

Docs Live can help format your ideas into structured documents based on conversational descriptions of what you need, whether that involves summarising longer documents or turning them into business proposals. When granted permission, it can also draw on information from your Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web to better personalise its outputs.

Keep Live lets you transcribe by talking naturally, with Gemini contextualising your notes without requiring specific words or explanations. For instance, you might ask it to add “ingredients for pesto” to your shopping list, and it will interpret the request accordingly.

Availability across platforms

These capabilities were previewed at Google I/O in May, but they are now rolling out to mobile platforms globally in English. Gmail Live is available on iOS and Android for users on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans. Docs Live and Keep Live are coming to AI Pro and Ultra plans, with Keep Live restricted to Android, while Docs Live is available on both iOS and Android.

All three features are described as “coming soon” for Workspace business customers.
