Google’s Gemini app for Windows has arrived, giving desktop users a faster route to the company’s AI assistant. The release follows a dedicated MacOS client launched earlier in 2026, and extends Gemini’s reach across another major desktop environment.
Gemini is already accessible on virtually every device capable of browsing the internet, but the new desktop client is designed to make Google’s AI even easier to reach. Rather than opening a browser tab, Windows users can now summon the assistant directly from their machine.
How the Windows App Works
The standout feature is a keyboard shortcut that opens Gemini instantly, allowing users to start a conversation without navigating away from what they are working on. This shortcut brings the assistant to the foreground on demand, streamlining everyday tasks.
The app also introduces support for Gemini Spark, which is set to work with local files stored on your computer. According to the Gemini team, local file access for Gemini Spark on the new Windows app should be arriving soon, expanding what the assistant can do beyond cloud-based interactions.
Pricing and Availability
The Gemini app for Windows is free to download and use. However, certain advanced Gemini features require a paid subscription, in line with Google’s existing approach across its AI products.
The move mirrors Google’s earlier MacOS release, signalling a broader push to embed Gemini natively within desktop operating systems rather than confining it to the web. With both Windows and MacOS now supported, Google has established dedicated clients across the two most widely used desktop platforms.
Local file access for Gemini Spark on the Windows app is expected to follow the initial launch.
