The Gemini desktop app is now available on Windows, following the macOS launch earlier in 2026. Google has designed the application to offer instant access to its AI assistant directly alongside whatever you are working on, without disrupting your workflow.
The app is launched using an Alt + Space keyboard shortcut, allowing users to call up Gemini quickly. According to Google, this makes it straightforward to carry out a quick fact-check on a document or generate a few title ideas for a presentation, before jumping straight back into the task at hand.
What the Gemini desktop app offers
Beyond quick queries, the desktop app includes Gemini Spark, described as a 24/7 personal AI agent with access to Connected Apps. Users can also generate images through Nano Banana and create videos through Gemini Nano, all from within the desktop environment.
Visually, the window largely mirrors the Gemini website, with the addition of a side panel providing access to Notebooks and Recents. Google describes the application as “lightweight and quiet”, positioning it as an unobtrusive companion to existing desktop software and daily apps.
Availability and future updates
The Gemini for desktop app is available on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and can be downloaded directly from Google’s dedicated Gemini desktop page. The company has indicated that further native desktop capabilities will roll out over time, suggesting the current release is an initial foundation rather than a finished product.
Users can press Alt + Space to polish drafts, summarise long documents, brainstorm new ideas, and produce custom images and videos alongside their preferred tools. The Windows release extends Gemini’s reach on desktop platforms following its earlier arrival on macOS in April 2026.
