Cricket 5G Home Internet is the newest broadband alternative to arrive from a mobile provider, using the same cellular network that powers customers’ phones. As 5G speeds increasingly rival traditional broadband, more carriers are questioning why households should pay for separate phone and home connections, and Cricket Wireless has now joined that group.
The standalone service delivers unlimited data on AT&T’s 5G network for around £47 per month with Auto Pay enabled. Customers must also purchase a Cricket Gateway modem, which costs approximately £39. Bundling a wireless line with the home internet service is priced at around £59 per month for new customers, dropping to roughly £35 per month for existing Cricket Wireless subscribers who add the home internet option.
Speeds and performance
The wireless Cricket Gateway creates a Wi-Fi network for household devices, delivering download speeds of up to 300Mbps and upload speeds of up to 30Mbps. In rare instances, speeds may be throttled for 30 minutes if a customer’s usage is contributing to congestion on the network. Actual speeds and availability depend on the quality of AT&T’s coverage in a given area.
Pricing and terms
Because this is a prepaid service, there is no ongoing contract. The gateway is purchased outright rather than rented or leased, which means cancelling the service leaves customers with the hardware rather than the task of returning it. Cricket also includes taxes within the advertised prices, in contrast to carriers that add these as separate fees.
