Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from making purchases on its store on behalf of users, marking a fresh point of tension between the two technology giants over automated shopping tools.
A popup message began appearing for Muse users at the start of the week, informing them that continued access by an unauthorised AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, terms to which its customers have already agreed. The block prevents the agent from browsing and buying items on the retailer’s platform.
Why Amazon Stepped In
Meta did not notify Amazon that Muse would access its store, according to reports. That lack of disclosure appears central to Amazon’s decision to restrict the tool. The retailer stated that third-party applications offering to make purchases on behalf of customers fall clearly within the scope of its usage rules.
Amazon also raised privacy and security concerns. The company highlighted that Muse failed to identify itself when browsing the store, and that it seemingly captured customer credentials during the process. Both points formed part of the rationale for cutting off access.
The Wider AI Shopping Debate
The move underscores growing friction around AI shopping agents that act autonomously on behalf of consumers. As these tools become more capable of navigating retail sites, completing transactions and managing accounts, questions about consent, transparency and data handling are moving to the forefront for major platforms.
For Amazon, the requirement that automated agents identify themselves and operate within agreed terms reflects a broader stance on how external software interacts with its systems. The retailer’s Conditions of Use apply to all customers, and it has signalled that agents acting without authorisation will not be permitted to transact on the platform.
