Tim Cook is set to remain far more involved in Apple than many anticipated, with his new remuneration package suggesting a substantial ongoing role at the company. Following his transition from chief executive to Executive Chairman, Cook will receive a yearly package worth approximately £35 million, a figure that points to continued influence over Apple’s operations.
The reshuffle comes just days before the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro models and the foldable iPhone Ultra, with John Ternus stepping up as the new chief executive.
An unprecedented pay package
The combination of salary and stock units brings Cook’s annual package to around £35 million, a total that industry observers describe as unprecedented for a chairman of a public company. It is reportedly double the highest-earning chairmen elsewhere, a sum more commonly associated with high-end chief executive compensation. As the stock units are likely to rise in value, the overall figure could grow larger over time.
New chief executive John Ternus will receive a similarly structured package worth roughly £43 million. The scale of Cook’s earnings has fuelled speculation that Apple intends for him to stay considerably more engaged with the business than outsiders might have expected.
Working behind the scenes
As Executive Chairman, Cook is expected to oversee many of Apple’s behind-the-scenes operations, including the demanding task of negotiating with whichever administration is currently in power. His years of experience make him well suited to leading these discussions.
Ternus, meanwhile, assumes the public-facing role that Cook has held until now. He already has the task of announcing the foldable iPhone, expected to be named the iPhone Ultra, this month, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Cook may still surface in the news occasionally, perhaps visiting another country or being spotted at the White House, though it appears unlikely that he will attend another Apple event in person. The handover positions Ternus as the new face of the company at product launches going forward.
