At Snapdragon Summit 2026, Microsoft introduced two updated Surface devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite chips, extending the silicon partnership that has increasingly defined the company’s portable range. Brett Ostrum, Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Surface Devices, took to the stage on the second day of keynotes to reveal new versions of the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop.
Both machines now run the Snapdragon X2 Elite for improved performance and battery life. The chips had already reached larger Surface models earlier in the year, and their arrival in the smaller sizes completes the rollout across Microsoft’s PC line-up. Alongside the processor change, the refreshed devices offer expanded RAM options of 16GB and 24GB, up from 8GB and 16GB in their predecessors.
Phone Silicon Heritage Shapes Camera Performance
A key advantage of the Snapdragon X2 Elite, first shown at last year’s Snapdragon Summit, stems from the years Qualcomm spent developing smartphone chips. The original Snapdragon X Elite processors were unveiled in 2023 as the company’s return to PC silicon, aiming to challenge Apple laptops on battery life and performance. Central to that pitch was applying lessons from phone chip design to the laptop space.
According to Ostrum, the new Surface devices deliver superior cameras thanks to the image signal processing on the Elite X2 chips, inherited from phone camera hardware. Where Apple previously led on webcam image quality, Qualcomm’s investment in ISP and the camera pipeline has produced a marked improvement in the video captured by Surface webcams.
“With our [Surface] Pro and laptops that we announced earlier this year [with] Snapdragon X2 Elite, we took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots from Apple in terms of camera quality,” Ostrum said, referencing DxOMark’s laptop rankings. Those rankings currently place Microsoft’s 13.8-inch Surface Laptop and 13-inch Surface Pro in first and second position, above Apple’s MacBook Pro models, for camera quality.
Why Webcam Quality Now Matters
Camera quality is rarely the first consideration for consumers or commercial buyers shopping for laptops and two-in-ones. Yet with so much time now spent in Teams and Zoom meetings, the standard for webcams has become more important than buyers might admit, particularly as ever-improving phone cameras continue to raise expectations.
Ostrum stressed that the gains do not come from the lenses or sensors alone but from the image processing pipeline Qualcomm has refined. “I can put the same sensors into multiple silicon platforms, but the best solution is going to come with a Qualcomm” chip, he said. The updated line-up also introduces a new Surface Mouse with haptics that buzz and pulse against the user’s palm.
