Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 owners are reporting the arrival of a feature many had thought would never reach their devices: the ability to share files to AirDrop directly from Quick Share. The capability first appeared on the Pixel 10 late last year and had, until now, been limited to newer handsets.
The functionality lets Android users transfer files to iPhones over Apple’s AirDrop protocol through Google’s own sharing tool. After launching on the Pixel 10, it expanded to devices including the Galaxy S25, OnePlus 15 and Motorola Razr Fold, but never made its way to Pixel models older than the Pixel 8a.
Older Pixels begin receiving the feature
Owners of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 Pro have started seeing notifications indicating that AirDrop over Quick Share is now available on their phones. For some users, however, the feature reportedly does not yet function, which may suggest Google is preparing to enable it fully through a forthcoming software update.
Because Google has not officially confirmed support for these older models, the notifications could also be an error. That said, the company typically introduces new features gradually, so this may mark the start of a phased rollout that could take some time to reach every eligible device.
The Quick Share with iPhone FAQ page does not currently list any of these phones among the supported devices, though its fine print states that the feature is available on “mobile devices and tablets”.
Pixel Tablet may also join the list
A Pixel Tablet user has also reported receiving a notification for the feature. If confirmed, this would make it the first Android tablet capable of transferring files to AirDrop.
The list of devices supporting AirDrop over Quick Share continues to grow. It already includes the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S26 series, the Oppo Find X9 series and the vivo X300 Ultra. The feature is expected to arrive on the Honor Magic 8 Pro, the Oppo Find X8 series and several other models in the near future.
When the feature originally launched on the mid-range Pixel 8a, some owners of the 2023 Pixel 8 Pro expressed frustration at being left out, while others noted that AirDrop support had never been formally promised for their devices.
It has been almost a year since Google first introduced AirDrop over Quick Share, and the feature is now beginning to expand to these older Pixel handsets.
