The iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil with USB-C across both of its displays, bringing basic stylus functionality to iOS for the first time. While Apple was unable to make the Apple Pencil Pro compatible with the foldable device, the wired variant pairs and works without difficulty.

How Apple Pencil works with iPhone Duo

The Apple Pencil with USB-C is compatible with the iPhone Duo because it can pair and charge over a cable. This connection method sidesteps the challenges that reportedly prevented broader stylus support on the folding handset.

A rumour circulating in late August indicated that Apple had attempted to include Apple Pencil support but encountered difficulties. The issue centred on where the Apple Pencil would need to mount for charging, a placement that interfered with the ease of opening and closing the device.

A first for iOS

Bringing the Apple Pencil to the iPhone Duo marks the first time these basic stylus functions have arrived on iOS. Given the size of the foldable’s displays, the absence of any stylus support would have been a notable limitation for users seeking to make full use of the larger screen area.

By relying on the cabled USB-C connection rather than magnetic mounting and charging, Apple found a route to enable stylus input while preserving the device’s folding mechanism. The Apple Pencil Pro, which depends on that mounting approach, remains unsupported on the iPhone Duo.
