iPhone 18 Pro Max: AT&T Service Fault Needs Device Swap
iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T losing service are getting replacements, as Apple confirms no software update can restore affected units.

Owners of the iPhone 18 Pro Max on the AT&T network who lost service are being given a replacement handset, after Apple confirmed that no software update can restore an affected unit. The company acted quickly, yet the fact that a swap is the only remedy points to a wider issue that has not been reported on rival devices such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Apple’s update prevents new cases, not existing ones

Owners began reporting in late September that their iPhone 18 Pro Max was dropping into SOS mode on AT&T, leaving them unable to make calls, send texts or use data. AT&T acknowledged the problem first, and on 2 October 2026 Apple confirmed it in an official statement.

Apple stated that it had identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. The company released iOS 27.0.1 earlier that week, strongly encouraging all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update, and also issued a carrier settings update. Together, these updates are meant to help prevent the issue from occurring.

iOS 27.0.1, released on 28 September, and the AT&T carrier settings update that followed on 2 October are both designed to stop new cases. Neither one, however, can restore service on a phone that is already affected, so those units must be replaced. Apple says it has only seen the issue on the Pro Max on AT&T, and affected customers can request a replacement through either Apple or AT&T.

Why affected handsets must be replaced

Apple has not said what causes the problem, and that matters because the fix tells its own story. A setting or a software bug can usually be reversed with another update. When the only cure is a new phone, it suggests something on the affected units changes in a way that software cannot reach.

The obvious suspect is the modem. The US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80, while the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Duo and the Pro Max sold outside the US all use Apple’s own C2. There is no proof the modem is to blame, and Apple has not pointed to it.

It also helps to understand what the two updates do. An iOS update changes the phone’s software across the board, while a carrier settings update is a much smaller package that updates network settings to improve connectivity and can add support for features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. It installs in under a minute, and users usually receive a prompt for it. Both are software, so both can change how the phone behaves going forward, which is why Apple shipped them together. What neither can do, by Apple’s own account, is restore a phone already stuck in SOS mode.
