iOS 27: Apple TV Remote App Gains Hidden New Features
iOS 27 brings a redesigned Apple TV Remote app with an app launcher and Top Shelf content hidden behind feature flags, hinting at a new Apple TV 4K.

iOS 27 is bringing significant changes to the Apple TV Remote app, with several features currently concealed behind feature flags. The renewed focus on the software remote is being read as a signal that a new Apple TV 4K box could be on the way.

The overhaul began with iOS 27 beta 1. Apple is restoring the Remote app from its cut-down state as a Control Centre tile back to a full application that can be placed on the Home Screen. This applies to both iPhone and iPad. The Apple Watch has always had a dedicated Remote app.

New features surface in iOS 27

The iOS 27 release candidate introduces a refreshed design alongside two new features, both hidden behind feature flags for now. The first is an app launcher that allows users to open apps directly on their Apple TV. The second brings Top Shelf content from the selected app on the Apple TV into the Remote experience.

These additions are not yet visible in the standard interface, but their functionality has already been demonstrated. The current version of the Remote app is centred on acting as a virtual directional pad, essentially mimicking the physical remote through software. The updated version goes further by making fuller use of its software capabilities.

Hardware changes expected alongside the update

Apple is also expected to update the physical Siri Remote when it releases a new Apple TV 4K. The volume of activity around the software remote is regarded as an indication that Apple is giving additional attention to the hardware box, which typically points to a new product in development.

The Remote app changes apply across iPhone and iPad, expanding what has previously been a straightforward software replica of the physical remote into a more capable tool. With the app launcher and Top Shelf content sitting behind feature flags in the iOS 27 release candidate, the features are ready for activation once Apple chooses to enable them.
