Samsung has ended software support for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, with both wearables reaching the conclusion of their five-year update cycle. The two smartwatches will no longer receive any further updates from the company.
The change was confirmed through an amendment to Samsung’s Security Updates page, where the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are no longer listed. Samsung’s smartwatches typically receive quarterly security patches, and it is within this schedule that the update has been applied. According to Samsung, both models have now reached the end of their update lifecycles.
Which Samsung watches remain supported
Following the change, the oldest Samsung wearables still receiving updates are the Galaxy Watch 5 (40mm and 44mm) and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Owners of a Galaxy Watch 4 series device have exhausted their allotted five years of updates. The timing of the announcement, made in September, aligns with the final update for the range, which rolled out in early August.
That last update was minimal, as expected for a device of its age. Samsung delivered only the essential fixes required to keep the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic protected against malicious attacks, with no additional features included.
The legacy of the Galaxy Watch 4 series
The Galaxy Watch 4 series drew considerable attention on launch, as Samsung moved away from its in-house Tizen OS in favour of Google’s Wear OS. Samsung co-developed Wear OS 3 for its Galaxy watches, marking a significant shift for the brand’s wearable strategy.
Despite this transition, the software experience attracted criticism. The user interface closely mirrored Tizen, even though the underlying platform was Wear OS 3. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic also lacked some established Wear OS features that were readily available on rival devices such as the TicWatch.
In 2026, Samsung’s current line-up is headed by the Galaxy Watch 9 series, which uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. The company has continued to expand the health capabilities of its wearables, including features for heart health monitoring.
