Apple Child Safety Tools Face Fresh UK Legislative Threat

Apple Child Safety Tools Face Fresh UK Legislative Threat
Apple's child safety features are expanding with iOS 27, but the UK government continues to threaten new legislation on protecting children online.

Apple’s child safety features are already substantial and set to expand further with iOS 27, yet the UK government remains dissatisfied and continues to raise the prospect of new legislation.

The company already provides a range of tools and APIs designed to protect children from viewing or sending content deemed unsuitable. These form part of a broader framework that Apple has been building out across successive software releases.

What Apple Already Offers

Apple introduced Sensitive Content Warnings with iOS 17 in 2023 for child accounts, later making the feature available as an option for adults as well. Several additional protections have been added since then, including age verification systems in the UK.

A comprehensive rethink of child safety is also on the way with iOS 27, which is due to arrive soon and will broaden the existing toolset. Together, these measures represent a continued effort to strengthen safeguards for younger users on Apple devices.

Government Pushes for Legislation

Despite these developments, the existing measures are not considered sufficient, and further legislation may still be introduced. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told the House of Commons that the government intends to bring forward legislation on the matter.

Nandy did not specify when such legislation would be introduced, nor did she outline the scope or extent of the proposed rules. The lack of detail leaves open questions about how any future requirements might interact with the protections Apple has already deployed.

Apple’s approach has centred on providing on-device safeguards and developer tools rather than relying solely on external oversight. The age verification systems already active in the UK reflect an attempt to align with regional expectations around protecting children online.

With iOS 27 expected to introduce a reworked child safety framework, the timing places Apple’s own expansion of these features alongside the government’s stated intention to legislate.
