Samsung smart glasses could take a significant step forward, with fresh reports suggesting the company is developing a new pair featuring an in-lens colour display. The move would mark a notable escalation from its current voice-led approach, positioning Samsung against rival products in the growing Android XR category.
According to industry sources, Samsung has reportedly tapped Samsung Display to create microdisplays for a future pair of AI-powered smart glasses. The panels would be designed to present text, notifications, icons and navigation arrows directly within the lenses, rather than relying solely on audio feedback.
What the colour display glasses might offer
The reported glasses would focus on showing text, notifications, icons and navigation arrows on an extremely thin panel. To achieve this, Samsung is said to be leaning on its display division to produce ultra-small panels measuring roughly 0.2 inches or smaller for the lenses.
One of the central hurdles is the field of view. Samsung is reportedly chasing a wide field of view to accommodate the volume of information users would need to see, which is described as a considerable technical challenge for such compact hardware.
How this differs from Samsung’s current eyewear
Samsung already has its Intelligent Eyewear, developed in partnership with Google and featuring designs from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These represent Samsung’s first smart glasses, but they lean heavily on voice interaction. Users can communicate with Google’s Gemini for navigation, order pickups and photos, with the glasses fitted with a camera and a microphone to handle those tasks.
Google reiterated its Samsung partnership during this summer’s Unpacked event. The Intelligent Eyewear are not yet on sale; at their original announcement, Samsung indicated they would arrive later in the autumn, with their emphasis remaining primarily on hands-free, voice-focused assistance rather than a full display.
The prospect of adding a proper colour screen would represent a clear step up, moving Samsung into more direct competition with display-equipped rivals in the sector. Some comparable products pair their glasses with a neural band, which makes it easier to control the display and on-lens content using hand gestures.
It remains very early to know precisely how Samsung’s first colour-display smart glasses will arrive. Reports suggest the glasses could launch in the second half of 2027 or early in 2028.
