iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2 have arrived for the public, likely marking the final refresh before Apple moves on to its next-generation software. The updates continue Apple’s support for its current operating systems as attention turns towards the upcoming iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.
The releases were issued on 8 September, one day ahead of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro special event. While the company is in the final stages of preparing its 27-generation platforms, it is also maintaining the software already running on millions of devices.
Build Details and What Has Changed
iOS 26.6.2 arrives as build 23G90, replacing 26.6.1, which was build 23G83. The iPadOS 26.6.2 update carries the same build number, 23G90, and likewise supersedes the earlier 23G83 release.
As with the previous 26.6.1 update from 17 August, these releases combine improvements for performance and security. Being an incremental update, and with the 27-generation software due shortly, the new versions are not expected to introduce notable new features.
Why the Update Matters
Despite the modest scope, installing the update promptly is advisable. This is particularly relevant given the growing trend of AI-based threat discoveries, which makes keeping devices current an important part of maintaining security.
The timing of these releases underscores Apple’s approach of servicing its existing platforms right up until the launch of its next major software generation. Users on compatible iPhone and iPad models can download the updates now through the Software Update section within the Settings app.
With iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 drawing closer, iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2 represent the current supported builds, carrying build number 23G90 across both platforms.
