T-Mobile is building new capabilities into its 5G network to make it more resilient, weaving AI into its infrastructure to keep users connected through unexpected disasters and major planned events alike. High-density crowds and severe weather can place considerable strain on a network, and rather than allowing speeds to drop or coverage to fail, the carrier is deploying new technologies to hold disruptions at bay.
A more resilient network
The carrier is upgrading its real-time Self-Organizing Network (SON) system and expanding Dynamic CX. SON uses AI and data to make real-time adjustments, rerouting signals and shifting antenna angles to manage traffic on the fly. T-Mobile is building new AutoPilot capabilities within SON to process these adjustments twice as fast, using intent-based AI automation to identify and resolve bottlenecks.
Dynamic CX complements this by using AI to identify potential large-scale events such as sports matches and festivals. It boosts capacity in advance and continuously tunes network performance throughout the event.
Whether a storm brings down a cell site or thousands of subscribers attempt to upload a post at the same time, the combined systems keep traffic moving. Both are being deployed nationwide. On top of these tools, T-Mobile uses hybrid generators to keep sites running up to 50% longer during prolonged power outages.
According to Salim Kouidri, Senior Vice President of Field Engineering and Operations at T-Mobile, resilience is built in every day rather than added when a storm is approaching, with continued investment in new technology, infrastructure, backup power and diverse transport.
Minimising disruptions
T-Mobile already has expansive coverage, so the next challenge is maintaining connectivity at all times with a smarter network and backup power. The company is adding redundant connections between cell sites and the broader network, so data keeps flowing even if one path is knocked out.
The carrier remains the only operator to make satellite connectivity available to all users. It also uses network slicing to power its T-Priority solution, giving first responders guaranteed access during emergencies. Intelligent capabilities during natural disasters are intended to keep affected communities connected when extreme weather strikes without warning.
Broadening AI integration
AutoPilot and Dynamic CX are recent examples of how T-Mobile is using AI to strengthen its network. While preparedness and foresight keep people connected during one-off events, the company is also leveraging AI to improve the everyday experience. It recently reported that AI-RAN improved spectral efficiency and downlink speeds during tests, meaning customers can expect greater capacity and faster downloads.
